How Much Premium Live Rock do I Need?
1-1.5 lbs. per gallon is the common ratio used for regular tank habitats.
2 lbs per gallon if your aquarium will be heavily stocked and you tend to over-feed your fish regularly or if your Live Rocks will be the only biological filter for the tank and you are not using a sand-bed. The more Live Rock you have the more stable your chemistry will be. Live Rock provides superior biological filtration and is essential for the long-term success of any aquarium.

Choose Aquaculture, and Save our Natural Reefs
Unfortunately, not all Live Rock is beneficial to our marine ecosystems. The most commonly available Live Rock is harvested directly from living coral reefs in Fiji and other small island nations in the indo-pacific. Destructive practices such as using dynamite and crowbars to break up these rocks into smaller pieces have decimated reef systems all around the globe. Many nations including the United States and the Bahamas have banned this practice from their waters many years ago, but as long as the US continues to allow the import of Live Rock, there will always be some underdeveloped country willing to break apart their reefs and sell them off to the highest bidders.
By choosing ARC Reef Aquacultured Live Rock, you are helping to end this destructive practice and support a viable and sustainable option to wild-harvested Live Rock. We are losing our reefs at an alarming pace. Our coral reefs are a gift, and once they’re gone, they’re gone forever. For every 1 lb. of Live Rock you purchase, ARC Reef will plant 10 lbs. of new reef material in the ocean. To date, we have successfully replanted 43,650 sq. ft. of living coral reefs. We plant these new reefs in areas that a barren and void of any life. We also offer our seed material to government agencies and other non-profits to help aid in boat groundings, bleaching events, and other reef-building projects. Don’t let our love for coral reefs mean the end of them.

If you are unhappy with your Live Rocks in any way, crash your tank, or simply need to start all over again, we will replace your purchased item free of charge for the full lifetime of your ownership.

GREAT Live Rock! Your Live rock has way more life and color on it than any other live rock I’ve ever purchased before, and I’ve had over 10 tanks in my time. My #150 is looking spectacular now and soon my corals will have a new place to call home on. Need to order a couple of shelf rocks on my next order to give it that finishing touch. Outstanding live rock!

Firstly let me tell you about my experience, I’ve spent months upon months researching different prices and different quality of live rocks due to wanting to set up a 29-gallon reef tank of my own. I’ve taught people on how to do the set up and have sold rocks from the stores I worked with but for my personal tank there was still a conservative factor as I’m a nature freak (love everything about nature and oceanic conservation). I’ve even had the opportunity to work with people in the aquarium business that carries live rocks and jacks them up for a minimum of 9 dollars a pound. Some time it may be even less and some time even more of a dollar figure. However, some of my findings have been dry purple painted rocks that have been soaked in aquarium salt water with a sump system so bacteria can harvest on them, and some have been rocks that have been in peoples tank for years with brown disgusting algae growing on it. If your unsure what the difference is between the two above: dry purple painted rock has no life on it, only after a few month then bacteria can harvest on it from the aquarium store water. Dirty stuff from their water can stick to the rock and eventually your putting that into your tank. As of the brown algae rock, live rocks should not have brown algae growing on it after years, as this is a sign of poor water quality. The poor water quality affects the rock and can put stress on the organisms (such as snails, crabs etc.) trying to thrive on it.
After months of researching I came across arc reefs website and a few other websites that carried live rocks. I went on YouTube and researched unboxing videos of them and went to amazon, Google, their websites and looked at some of their previous customers reviews and comments. Arc reef stood out the most. This is my favorite live rock company out of all. When I made my initial purchase I got to customize the types of rock I want in terms of size and shapes. This made my aquascape easier. My shipping took around a week due to the team at arc reef going out to harvest my rocks from the ocean and packing it properly and securely. When I received my order, the rocks (25 pounds) were boxed with a heavy-duty cardboard box with no leaks. When I opened it, the rocks were in multiple thick bags that helped prevented it from leaking and damaging. When I opened the bag the rocks were wrapped with towels that were wet. This is an amazing site to see as most companies use newspapers to wrap their rocks. Newspapers contain ink, which kills off the life and bacteria living on the rock. There was also enough water in the bags to keep the rocks and towels wet. I lifted the rocks out one by one and I was blown away as to see little crabs and snails coming out. The rocks had lost some color but that’s due to the shipping and DON’T WORRY ITS NORMAL, it will come back. I placed all the rocks in the tank and they look stunning. Within about a week MY TANK WAS FULLY CYCLED. No ammonia, nitrites, pH was great and nitrates were under one. Every day that goes by I noticed something different from the rocks and it kept getting better. After about a month I tested the water and levels were great, however I still did a water change due to it being a crucial part of owning a reef. The rocks were super interesting to watch as it had tiny starfishes and feather dusters popping out all over. A month later I ordered some corals and placed on the rocks and it started thriving with the right trace elements. The rocks are a stunner and I love them so much. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. I love receiving aquatic life by shipping, because it’s always a surprise. I have butterflies in my stomach just writing this and thinking about those beautiful rocks. The coralline algae in these rocks were great as well, loaded with it.
If you are unsure what’s going on with your rocks, check out the arc reef website (arcreef.com) to understand what species and critters might be in it. Also, the way arc reef harvest their rocks are great. NO DYNAMITES USE IN THIS HARVEST. Also learn the different stages and types of algae. Learn how to cure your rocks from the arc reef website. Also kick back with the arc reef radio hits. It makes you feel like you’re on a boat in the Caribbean. I have to say I am extremely jealous of what these people do. I would love to dive the reefs out in Florida and help preserve all our reefs. But I am glad this company is doing what they are doing.
To sum up everything, (A.R.C) Atlantic reef conservation, more like AWESOME, RELIABLE and CUSTOMER FRIENDLY. This is an amazing group of individuals that cares about our reefs and the extension/preservation of different species of aquatic life. The work that is done by this group is far beyond amazing due to their ability to replace every pound of live rock taken out of the ocean, with ten pounds when they harvest. This is becoming a far better method to creating an underwater world for the superstars of our ocean, the fish, corals and other undiscovered species of life. I LOVE THIS COMPANY SO MUCH for their efforts in making the ocean available to be in someone’s home aquarium. Thank you so much again. I will be a returning customer.
Special thank you to Tom.

Best live rock that I have seen ANYWHERE, period. Purchased their live rock, dry rock, and live sand and literally all of it was top quality, not the brown crap rocks that you see in most fish stores this was really healthy looking beautiful rock.

I just received my rocks today and I am BEYOND satisfied with not only the quality of the rocks but the fantastic customer service I received. My tank doesn’t have anything but the rock in it right now and already looks stunning. The colors are incredible even with the shipping process so I can’t imagine what they’ll look like here in a few weeks. I absolutely LOVE this company and will recommend to anyone starting a reef aquarium. Aquacultured rock is DEFINITELY the way to go and I feel great knowing my purchase is helping to preserve reefs.

Very pleased with ARC Premium Live Rock five months post purchase. Seemed a bit denser than I had hoped, but turns out that 225 lbs displaced less than 20 gallons of water volume. Coraline coverage was good and is absolutely great at this point. Used Kent Purple tech to assist (haven’t used before) and now have pretty close to 100% coverage. Rock does require cycling but after 2 or 3 weeks provides stellar biological filtration, including some nitrate conversion. This is my third large reef aquarium and have used several different types of rock over the decades. I am most pleased with the ARC rock vs Fiji, Carribean, Tonga and I’m sure a few others over the years. Will be placing order soon for another 50 to 100 lbs to provide more territory for my Angels and Tangs. Otherwise would be content with the 225 lbs in 260 gallon display tank. purchased 6/2017. date of review 10/2017.
Happy Reefing!
John

It has been 3 weeks since my rock has been in my aquarium.
I do have to bad mouth FedEx as they punctured the box and most all the water had leaked out. I believe the towel saved the rock. The box was well marked and arrows pointing up! When I saw the box I was so upset. I had made some salt water and immediately took the rocks out using the gloves that ARC provided and put them in some buckets with the water.
I then carefully began placing the rock into my aquarium. I have some white baserock from ARC some live rock from the neighbor who gave me all of his plus his fish because he was moving and I then purchased some rock from ARC.
Some of the rock was white and I was afraid it would not come back but in about 3 days it began to color back up. Now three weeks later I am so happy to say it is really colorful and the little corals that are on it are starting to really grow and show themselves!
I had looked for some live rock on several sites and one of the thing I didn’t like was all the plant growth that came with the other rocks. This rock eas not covered in stuff I had to scrap off. Instead I am finding som tiny Zoas and what looks like a tiny brain coral. I did not or have not found many hitchickers but my rock came to me shortly arter Irma rocked it around. I’m not upset by this as the little corals more than make up for this!
I am so very happy with my purchase and should I ever need more I will be coming back to ARC!
